A Legendary excursion

Last Saturday saw the third and final Haytor Hoppa Excursion take place.  25 people joined the evening event and were lead from Jays Grave to Bowermans Nose by Dartmoor Guide, Debbie Jenkins. Having taken advantage of the excursion connecting with onward services from Newton Abbot bus and train stations the group were ready to enjoy their evening on Dartmoor and experience something unlike what they would normally have on offer in Exeter, Crediton, Totnes or Teignmouth!

The atmospheric evening certainly helped as mist shrouded an almost full moon and allowed Debbie to engage the group in some of Dartmoor’s many legends as they walked across the open moor, stood beneath the magical Bowermans Nose or under tree canpoies.

It might have been my imagination but there seemed to be more than one or two who hurried back onto the bus at the end of teh story-telling…! The party were then driven to the Kestor Inn where they could choose from a special Hoppa menu as well as try a pint of Dartmoor Brewery’s Legend Ale!

The legends that were told included Kitty Jay, the hunter Bowerman, the hairy hands and Jan Reynolds and the devil.

If you would like to read more Dartmoor Legends see Legendary Dartmoor or purchase a book from the online shop.

It is hoped that funds will be found to run the Haytor Hoppa again in 2012 and if so then the Excursions will feature again!
